Hope Technology School has left a lasting impact on its graduates and their families. Here are some comments and pieces of student work that exemplify the significance of the HTS community on these families.
I am a sophomore at Santa Clara University who is studying Marketing and Studio Art.
Some of my happiest years were at HTS. I am forever grateful for the patience and compassion shown to me by my teachers and peers. It is because of your belief in me that I can be who I am today. I have ADHD and as a young kid, it was difficult for me to succeed in school. Going to HTS has helped me develop into someone who is not only social, but also academically successful and compassionate.
Being a student at HTS has helped me develop into a more confident and understanding person. The program has helped me empathize with students who have learning disabilities and special needs.
My biggest take away for HTS was an appreciation for differences. I now look at people who are different and see potential. I used to think that being different made you weak or strange. I now see being different as something to be proud of.
Thank you Hope Technology for making me who I am today. From the minute I walked in the first day, I knew this was a great school. Everyone here has been so kind and caring about me and I love remembering the fond times I had here.
I loved being a part of both Hope buildings, and still think very fondly of the times I have had there. Everyone has been so wonderful and caring, and I have been caring back. For that reason, and that reason alone, I thank hope Technology School.
Jonathan wrote the following poem during his time at HTS:
A Place where Dreams Grow
This is a place where people nurture and grow.
It is a place where dreams start to grow.
Where children are thriving shielded from hate.
Like an endless garden filled with life were no student makes the same mistake.
The teachers are kind and will help your every whim.
The type of people that will never let you fall.
The children are hopeful in everything they do.
They have learned never to give up no matter what anyone tells them to do.
They use technology at their disposal to help them learn.
When they start writing they take off like the wind.
Here all the students can truly spread their wings.
They are fueled by their imagination that has no bounds.
Our school focuses on fusing man with machine.
Our school does this in perfect harmony.
All of the students always wake up to a beautiful day.
This place is truly the best place to stay!
[Going to HTS helped me] develop character because I learned that regardless of one’s disabilities everyone should be treated the way they want to be treated themselves. With this in mind I was able to become very close to my friends with and without special needs because I did not look at them by their flaws, but by what they could become. Attending Hope Tech I was given the experience of being around people of all kinds of needs and being there for nine years I was able to acquire this skill as second nature. There is no way one could learn and understand people in that manner by getting second-hand information.
People in your experiences can influence you. At Hope Technology School I was able to learn how to interact with people with special needs by imitating my teachers. I saw how patient and kind the teachers were when there was a disruption in the classroom, such as someone yelling in pain. I was taught how to react when the kids with special needs needed a one-on-one helper. In many instance the children with special needs would have to be lead out the room to go to a quiet place to calm down. The one-one helpers were gentle, firm, disciplined, kind, and playful around everyone. The people with special needs could be included and treated the same way with the one-on-one helper.
