While tests scores don't tell the entire story, they are an indication of how a program is doing. Our test scores show our program is meeting the needs of our students.
Each year, schools around the nation take time to have their students take standardized tests to see how their program measures against a "national average". That average is the 50
th percentile on these tests.
Hope Technology School has been giving these tests to their students for the past 4 years. We use the CAT/6 test; the same test used by many elementary schools in the Bay Area.
Testing gives a snapshot of the program at a specific time. Children's scores are an indicator of how much they know but they should not be the only indicator. Each child's effort and work must be evaluated by their teacher and, along with test scores, give a picture of how they are doing.
According to the website maintained by the
Lucile Packard Foundation for Kid's Health, www.kidsdata.org, the percentage of children who scored above the 50
th per-centile for Reading in 3
rd grade in San Mateo County was 47%, in Santa Clara it is 49%. This means that 47 or 49 children out of each 100 scored at or above grade level on this test. Naturally there are schools that are stronger than the average, and some that are weaker. On the website, they list individual scores for some schools.
The reported averages for third grade for some selected schools in San Mateo and Santa Clara County are as follows:
San Mateo County: East Palo Alto Charter School 28%
Hillsborough City Elementary 77%
La Honda-Pescadero Unified 37%
Menlo Park City Elementary 80%
Millbrae Elementary 50%
Portola Valley Elementary 77%
Ravenswood City Elementary 18%
Redwood City Elementary 34%
Woodside Elementary 91%
Santa Clara County: Alum Rock Union Elem. 25%
Berryessa Union Elem. 45%
Charter School of Morgan Hill 83%
Gilroy Unified 40%
Los Altos Elementary 85%
Los Gatos Union Elementary 83%
Hope Technology School 100% Our school did well beyond the third grade level. Program wide, (that is for the whole school) for all students that completed the test, both typically developing and those with special needs we had 83% pass at grade level or better
.Looking at the typically developing children alone, we had 95% pass with grade level scores or better.
By test results, HTS shows its program to be one of the stronger programs in the area. Our measure are done as an inclusive program because our tests are given to both typically developing children and children with special needs. We are proud of our children and what they have accomplished; as well as for the work the teachers do to serve the program.
It is wonderful to see them work so hard and do so well in this test. Thank you one and all for your support.
